Section 5.4 - Protests
Protests of nonacceptance or nonpayment are another duty of the notary public. Only notaries public employed by financial institutions may execute protests, and then only during the course and within the scope of their employment with those institutions. A protest is a formal declaration made by the notary on behalf of a bill or note that acceptance or payment of the bill/note has been refused. Since protests for nonacceptance/nonpayment occur within complex and specialized financial and commercial contexts, and are uncommon relative to other notarial acts, they will not be covered in any detail in this unit.
