1. Complete Notary Education
The first step to becoming a California Notary Public is to complete the required notary training.

New Notaries: Must complete a 6-hour notary education course approved by the
California Secretary of State.

Renewing Notaries: Are required to complete a 3-hour renewal course.
2. Pass the California Notary Exam
After completing your education, all applicants must pass the California Notary Exam.

3. Receive Your Test Scores
You will receive a letter in the mail notifying you of your exam results.

Results are typically posted within 8-10 business days after your exam date.

4. Submit Your Carlifornia Live Scan
After passing the exam, you'll need to complete a Live Scan fingerprinting for a background check

5. Receive Your Commission Packet
Once your application is approved and your background check is cleared, you’ll receive
your notary commission packet by mail (typically 4-12 weeks after your exam).
Your packet will include:

Instructions for filing;
-
Your Notary Public Commission Certificate;

Oath and Certificate of Filing forms;
-
Certificate of Authorization to Manufacture Notary Public Seals; and
-
A list of authorized seal manufacturers.
6. Order Your Notary Supplies
You’ll need to purchase essential supplies to start working as a Notary Public, including:

7. File Your Notary Bond and Oath of Office
Within 30 days of the start date of your commission, you must file your notary bond and
take your Oath of Office at your local county clerk office. Bring the following items:
