Section 1.2 - Basic Qualifications

Before you begin, you must have the following basic qualifications (Government Code section 8201):

• Be a resident of California,

• Be at least 18 years of age;

• Be able to read, write and understand English; and

• Not have a disqualifying criminal history.

If you meet all of these qualifications, you will need to satisfy these requirements:

• Successfully complete a course of study approved by the Secretary of State,

• Pass a written examination prescribed by the Secretary of State, and

• Pass a thorough background check.
